David Schneuer was born in 1905 in Austro-Hungary, and later resided in Tel Aviv for several decades. His work is reminiscent of the lithographs and sketches of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, but with a somewhat looser approach to line, mark making and form. In the 1920s he was employed as a stage and poster designer in Berlin and Munich, developing his own visual language influenced by German artists such as Kirchner, Grosz and Beckmann, as well as the iconic French poster art of the Belle Epoque. After training at the Berufsschule in Munich, Schneuer lived in France for a brief but formative period. He also spent time in Dachau under the prevailing regime as an 'artistic dissident', before permanently relocating to Tel Aviv. Schneuer's oeuvre is best remembered for documenting Europe between the World Wars and the golden era of German Expressionism, in his own idiosyncratic visual language.
