Rare engraved hydrographic chart of Terra Australis by Matthew Flinders 1798-9, South Coast, Sheet VI, London 1814, 56.5 x 77.3cm (image), 61.5 x 82cm (frame), with many fascinating notes & depicting the whole of Van Diemens Land (Tasmania) with inset detail of approaches to Hobart, published by G&W Nicol February 4th, 1814. An example of this chart from the R.V. Tooley map collection is held by The National Library of Australia, (MAP RM 849). Some foxing spots & angular folds, professionally framed in excellent condition. Available for local pickup, otherwise courier to be arranged and paid for by bidder. *From the Frank Coulter collection. Side note: Matthew Flinders� chart, published in 1814, was the first chart to use the name Australia, and it accompanied Flinders� monumental publication,�A Voyage to Terra Australis. The chart reflects surveys undertaken by Flinders from 1796 on the southern coast of New South Wales and northern coast of Van Diemen�s Land and on his partial circumnavigation of Australia between 1801 and 1803 on the�Investigator. This map was originally owned by Benjamin Francis (Frank) Helpman 1814-1874, sailor & harbourmaster before being owned by Tasmania's First Premier, William Champ 1808-1892.
