Description
Rare engraved hydrographic chart of the N. and W. Parts of the Bass Strait, 53.3 x 31.5cm (image), 70 x 46.5cm (frame), discovered & sailed through in a Passage from England to Port Jackson in December 1800, in H.M. armed surveying vessel Lady Nelson commanded by Lt. JA.s Grant of the R.N. by direction of His Grace the Duke of Portland, likely produced by the Admiralty's first hydrographer from 1795-1808-Alexander Dalrymple and is the first map of the Victorian coastline, engraved by Samuel John Neele, Strand, London and published by Thomas Egerton, Whitehall, London on 27th December 1803. An original version of this map from the Ferguson rare map collection is held by The National Library of Australia, (MAP F 482). Some minor foxing along as published folds & professionally framed in excellent condition. Available for local pickup, otherwise courier to be arranged and paid for by bidder. *From the Frank Coulter collection. Side note: *Jane Austens first three novels,Sense and Sensibility,Pride and Prejudice, andMansfield Park, were published by Thomas Egerton who ran a Military Library in Whitehall, London, just across from the Admiralty Office.Egertons list was mainly composed of military treatises, maps, and training manuals, works designed to feed Britains war effort against Napoleon. He hardly ever published novels, and Jane Austen was his first female novelist. Her brother Henrys career as a militia officer and army agent probably provided the connection. Take a look at the original title page ofPride and Prejudice(reproduced in many modern paperbacks) and you will see at the foot of the page, Printed for T. Egerton, Military Library, Whitehall. *from website Jane Austen's House.
