Description
Bronze medal, 30mm diameter, 11.58g, struck by the Marquis De Leuville and presented to Captain H.C. Kane (in gold) in honour of British seamanship, after the H.M.S. Calliope (a calypso-class corvette/later third-class cruiser) skippered by Captain Kane, forced her way out of the Bay of Apia in the Samoan Islands during a tremendous cyclone, thus saving the ship & it's crew (refer to included extract from the Illustrated London News dated June 1887). One can assume that the bronze medal may have been presented to the ships crew, as officers received a 'white metal' version, highpoints rubbed & toned brown with hints of original red, holed for suspension, about fine, scarce.
