Description
Oil on composition board, approx. 34 x 44cm (image), 50 x 60cm (frame). Signed and dated lower right 'LEONARD LONG, 1978'. Some spotting evident, frame aged. An excellent example of this celebrated artist's approach to depicting the Australian landscape. Leonard Hugh Long, OAM, is widely acclaimed as one of Australia's most accomplished traditional landscape artists. Known for his painterly realist approach to capturing landscapes, Long had a keen sense for the dramatic, rendering the curvilinear forms and interplay of light and shade in his paintings with masterly execution. The influence of earlier artists of the Heidelberg School of painters is felt in his work - most notably Arthur Streeton and Charles Conder. Long's works are in the collections of the Vatican in Rome, the National Gallery Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney, and the Dunedin Public Art Gallery in New Zealand, among numerous others. In 1993, Long was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia 'for service to the arts as a painter of Australian landscapes.' At the age of 100, he continued to paint on a daily basis and staged a major centenary exhibition in 2011. Available for local pickup, otherwise courier to be arranged and paid for by bidder. Adequate advance notice of collection is required to ensure artwork is on site. Fees may apply for late collection.
