Description
Kangaroo print from copperplate engraving by William Byrne after a painting by George Stubbs 21.5 x 25.5cm (image) 33.5 x 36.5cm (frame), kangaroos were seen at Endeavour River on 23 June 1770, during the first of the voyages made by the British explorer Captain James Cook (1728-1779). Rough drawings were made by the artist Sydney Parkinson, who was working under the direction of Joseph Banks, the naturalist who travelled on this voyage of 1768-71. This artwork, is an engraving after a painting by George Stubbs (1724-1806). Stubbs had been commissioned by Banks to paint a portrait using samples of kangaroos brought back from the voyage. Errors include misrepresenting the hind feet and making the ears too large, importantly, this was the first image of a kangaroo seen in Europe. Also including hand coloured engraving illustrating 1. Lord Derby's Kangaroo, 2. Aroe Kangaroo, 3. Parry's Kangaroo, 4. Wooly Kangaroo, 5. Brush-Tailed Kangaroo, 6. Rat-Tailed Hypsiprymnus, 7. Rabbit-Eared Perameles, by James Hope Stewart, 13 x 20.5cm (image) 24 x 32cm (frame), one of the earliest engravings to identify the different type of macropods, from 'A History of the Earth & Animated Nature', by the poet Oliver Goldsmith, some foxing spots, both on toned paper, professionally framed in very good condition. Available for local pickup, alternatively, courier to be arranged and paid for by bidder.
