Description
Circa 1875-1900 intricate silver pending or belt buckle in concave scalloped form, intricately fashioned with mythical birds, figures and peony flowers in the 'Peranakan' style, approximately 82mm wide x 64mm high, weight 28.5g, undamaged extremely fine. Side note: Belt buckles were worn by Peranakan men and women as part of their official dress. A silver bar on the back of the buckle allowed a sash to be threaded through securing the buckle to the waist. Elaborate buckles were worn at wedding ceremonies by distinguished Peranakans as a way of signalling their wealth and status. Peranakans were unique amongst the many Chinese who emigrated to Malaysia. Whilst other Chinese immigrants remained very loyal to their Chinese roots, customs and beliefs, the Peranakans chose to adopt many Malay customs and practices, including their elaborate wedding ceremonies.
