Description
Engraving, 29 x 49cm (paper), 22 x 38cm (image), depicts impressively scaled rock monuments on Easter Island (Rapa Nui), as encountered by Captain Cook on his second voyage. Titled and dated at bottom, captioned (left) 'Drawn from Nature by W. Hodges' and (right) 'Engraved by W. Woollett, No. XLIX', published Feb. 1st 1777, by W. Strahan (London). Some foxing (mainly around edges) and folds. An important record of European/Polynesian contact and exploration, duplicates exist in the National Library of Australia, Auckland Art Gallery and The British Museum.
