Henrikas (Henry) Salkauskas was born in Kaunas (Kovno), Lithuania, later completing study in West Germany and in Paris at L'Ecole des Arts et Metiers, with a specialisation in graphic arts. The artist arrived in Melbourne in 1949, before relocating to Canberra and Sydney, eventually becoming an Australian citizen. His work is represented in national, state and regional galleries in Australia. The Art Gallery of New South Wales held a retrospective exhibition in 1981 and established the Henry Salkauskas Contemporary Art purchase award in his honour.
