This iron meteorite has in it a unique crystallization known as the Widmansttten crystal structure pattern, a result of cooling in outer space over billions of years. By far the largest known strewn field on Earth, the Gibeon meteorite field was first discovered by the Nama people of South Africa, who made use of the fragments as tools and weapons. Scientific study of the fragments began in 1836, after English captain J. E. Alexander sent samples to London.
