Description
Oil on canvas, 60 x 115cm, signed lower right, titled at lower centre, some wear and crazing of paint especially to middle right side, overall condition consistent with age. Artist signature partially legible, possibly Beell or Brell. An interesting maritime painting worthy of further research. Available for local pickup, otherwise courier to be arranged and paid for by bidder.

The ship depicted is likely the British 'St Lawrence' built in the 1860s (official number 29115) and captured in a photograph in the collection of the State Library of South Australia. Weighing 1094 tons, it was employed in the cargo trades, mainly transporting timber from North America, Australia and New Zealand. The ship is said to have been destroyed by fire in Albany harbour in September 1898, with remains located during dredging operations in the late 1970s.
