Description
Oil on canvas, a Queensland country scene of rider with chestnut horse and packhorse, entitled 'Johnno doing a Burke & Wills', signed Sir Patrick Kilvington. This artwork was commissioned by the Nicholson family as a 21st birthday gift for 'Johnno' (John Nicholson), in contemporary frame, 40 x 50 cm.
Sir Patrick Kilvington was born 1922 in the UK, moving to Australia in 1950. He was an Impressionistpainter who specialised inrural horse & country oils, attended various rodeos and country events where he studied and sketched. He was known as a badly behaved young man and he reflects this in many of his subjects. This example signed 'Sir Patrick Kilvington', he was knighted by Prince Leonard of Hutt River Province, which carries no actual title, but he later claimed a defunct British family title. He became a full-time painter in 1971 and passed away in 1990. He had many successful sold-out exhibitions in London, Sydney and Brisbane; many galleries and collections exhibit examples of his work. To date, the record price for one of his paintings is $6,264 in 2018 (approximately $6,700 in today's money).
Artist's royalties are not payable on this work as the seller acquired the work in the 1970s.
