Description
Papuan Industries Ltd penny-sized bronze token c.1905. The company was floated in 1904 by Reverend F.W.Walker, a missionary on Badu, Torres Straits. By 1912, P.I.L. had 10 aborigine-owned pearling boats working in the Torres Strait were forced to sell their pearl-shell through the government offices. Workers and their families had to buy goods from the stores with these coupon notes and tokens: this paternalistic control was greatly resented by Islanders. PIL was taken over by the Queensland Government in July 1930 and re-named the Aboriginal Industries Board. Rare, few examples exist now.
