Description
Leichardt Expedition related 1857 envelope addressed to Hovender Hely, a member of Leichardt's unsuccessful 1846-47 expedition. Born in Dublin, Hely had been described by Leichardt as 'a likable idler' but dismissed him for bawdiness and dereliction of duty. Hely later led the 1851 official search for the missing explorer. Hely eventually became a politician then magistrate at Gosford, NSW.
