Description
Gold solidus of Heraclius (610-40 AD), barbarous style, struck in Carthage after the execution of Phocas in mid 610 AD. The reign of terror of the tyrant Emperor was ended in an open revolt led by Heraclius, the local Military commander, who was elevated to Emperor on Oct 5th. By this time Heraclius' troops had occupied Egypt & Cyprus; Constantinople fell at the end of the year. Equal sized busts of Heraclius & Heraclius the Younger, both bare-headed, with cross between, reverse cross on steps, CONOB (Constantinople mint) Officina letter 'theta' (S.710, MIB.134.1, DO.210.3). Early coins from the Rebellion are rare.
